R&B in the United Kingdom is ever-growing, constantly expanding to suit the contemporary standard and wider sonic and cultural markets. Shaé Universe is a firmly rooted part of this development. Gaining consistent traction through her formal debut “No Stallin’,” the vocalist has gone on to work with the likes of Etta Bond and Boogie. As of late, she’s released her latest single “You Lose” which stands as a pulsating, forward-leaning song, helping to pioneer the emerging sub-genre, loosely referred to as R&Drill. Paying homage to Monsta Boy’s “Sorry (I Didn’t Know)”, Universe’s weighted and deeper vocals take the reins as she beautifully overcomes heartbreak.
Yesterday, the Nigerian-born, UK raised talent unveiled the singles accompanying video which, stylistically, adheres to the current COVID-19 rules and regulations. Directed by Daniel Amoakoh, the visual features 100 women, each embodying the empowering sentiments shared on “You Lose”, from the comfort of their homes. Universe herself appears throughout, boldly addressing self-love and inner-confidence. Elsewhere, we see appearances from presenter Hemah, artists such as Emeli Sandé, Jaz Karis, Lady Donli and Sinéad Harnett, as well as Shaé Universe’s fans and listeners. Conceptualised and filmed in just two weeks, “You Lose” stands as a “new independent anthem” according to Amoakoh who sought to deliver a “colourful” and “relatable” supporting visual.
